Methodology

How the Just J handicapping formula works

No black box. Every Just J pick comes out of the same five-factor model, and the number is printed next to the pick so you can argue with it. Here is exactly what goes in.

1. Home field

A baseline edge for the host, trimmed for short weeks, long travel and neutral sites.

2. Quarterback

Our weekly QB power score: efficiency, ball security and pressure performance.

3. Offensive line

Run-block and pass-protection grades, adjusted for injuries and rookies.

4. Defensive line

Pressure rate and run-stop grades — the trench side most markets underprice.

5. Hunger score

Contract years, job security and motivation across the roster and staff.

The output

The five edges add into one tilt number, compared against the spread and total.

Frequently asked

How does Just J's handicapping formula work?
Every game is scored on five factors — home field advantage, quarterback play, offensive line, defensive line and contract-year hunger. Each factor produces a rating edge for one side, the edges are added into a single tilt number, and that tilt is compared to the Vegas spread and total. We only post a pick where the formula and the market disagree.
What are the five factors?
1) Home field advantage, a fixed baseline adjusted for travel and spot. 2) Quarterback rating, from our weekly QB power score. 3) Offensive line grade. 4) Defensive line grade. 5) Hunger score, which measures contract-year and job-security motivation across the roster and coaching staff.
What do the confidence stars mean?
Stars run 1 to 5 and measure how far the formula's number sits from the posted line, not the chance of winning. Five stars requires a six-point or larger disagreement with the spread. A one-star game is a lean, not a play.
Where do the spreads and totals come from?
Lines update automatically from live sportsbook data, so the numbers on the picks page, the team schedules and the fantasy tools always match. Graded results use the closing number.
Does the formula use preseason or current-season data?
Weeks 1 through 7 blend preseason ratings with current-season results, with the current season weighted more heavily each week. From Week 8 on, the formula runs entirely on the current season.
Is this a guarantee of winning bets?
No. It is research. Every pick is published with its number so you can see the reasoning, track it and disagree with it. Bet only what you can afford to lose.
