HANDICAPPING PROFILE

HEAD COACH

Shane Beamer — 6th season at South Carolina

LIFETIME COACHING RECORD

33–30 at South Carolina

Took over a 2-8 team in 2021 and immediately posted a 7-6 record with a bowl win. Best season was 2024 (9-4, 5-3 SEC, Citrus Bowl appearance). Most wins through four years of any coach in program history, ahead of Steve Spurrier's pace.

SOUTH CAROLINA ATS RECORD

No single published career ATS figure

2025 opened top-10 in the AP poll after a 2-0 start, then lost 7 of 8 to finish 4- 8 (1-7 SEC) — one of the more dramatic single-season collapses in the conference. Fired OC Mike Shula on Nov. 2 mid-season.

HANDICAPPING NOTES

  • Extreme top-10-to-4-8 collapse: South Carolina opened 2025 ranked top-10 after beating Virginia Tech, then lost 7 of 8. That kind of preseason-hype-to-collapse pattern is worth watching for again in 2026 given another round of major offensive turnover.
  • Close-game frustration is a real trend: Beamer's Gamecocks led or were within a score entering the 4th quarter in 10 of 12 games in 2025, including late losses to Missouri, Alabama, and Texas A&M — a team that competes but hasn't closed, a live "bad beats" narrative.
  • Third new OC in three years: Kendal Briles arrives after explosive offenses at TCU, Arkansas, and Baylor — if the LaNorris Sellers pairing clicks, South Carolina's offense (104th nationally in 2025) could look completely different in 2026.

COORDINATORS & SCHEME

OFFENSE / DEFENSE

OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR

Kendal Briles — 1st season • Aggressive, QB-friendly spread

Arrives from TCU (2023-25), where his offenses averaged 30+ points per game; previously ran a rushing attack at Arkansas that ranked among the nation's top-3 in yards per game (2021-22). Paired with dual-threat QB LaNorris Sellers, this is viewed as the ideal offensive marriage after South Carolina finished 104th nationally in scoring in 2025.

DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR

Clayton White — 6th season • Base 4-2-5

The steady hand of the program — White and co-DC Torrian Gray have been with Beamer since 2021. The defense has been the consistent strength of the roster even as the offense cycled through three coordinators in three years.

2025 SEASON RECAP

RECORD & VENUE NOTES

2025 RECORD

4–8 (1–7 SEC)

Started 2-0 and reached the AP top-10 for the first time since 2014, then lost 7 of the final 8 games. Fired OC Mike Shula on Nov. 2; WR coach Mike Furrey finished the year as play-caller.

HOME FIELD

Williams–Brice Stadium

Natural grass, Columbia. Averaged the 14th-largest crowd of any college football team in 2025 (79,334) — a solid, well-supported home environment even through a difficult season.

NFL WATCH

Turned down the NFL Draft and the portal to return; 2024 Freshman Offensive Player of the Year and a potential Top-10 2027 NFL Draft pick if the new Briles offense unlocks him.

RB1Matt FullerRS-Soph

Named Joe Morrison Offensive Player of the Spring; broke a 72-yard TD run at LSU in 2025 and is penciled in as the starter after fending off transfer- portal interest.

WR1Nyck Harbor

Behind Harbor, the receiving corps is still being sorted out under new WRs coaching in fall camp.

OFFENSIVE LINE

2026 PROJECTED
Jacarrius PeakOT

NC State transfer (former three-star, 2022); 247Sports' No. 3- ranked OT in the 2026 transfer cycle, brought in specifically to protect Sellers in the new Briles system.

Randy Clements' unitOL

New OL coach (from TCU, followed Briles) overseeing a largely reconstructed line for 2026.

HANDICAPPING NOTE — O-LINE

  • A rebuilt line under a new coach protecting a new-system QB is real variance — but Peak gives it a clear anchor, more continuity than several other offenses in this guide.

DEFENSIVE LINE

2026 PROJECTED
Dylan StewartEdge

Former five-star and the only returning starter on the defensive line; named one of the top-3 impact players in the country for 2026 by one national outlet. {fivestarbadge}

LINEBACKERS

2026 PROJECTED
  • The linebacker corps was the only defensive group that did not get a portal infusion this offseason — largely the same room back from 2025, playing behind a deep, retooled defensive line and secondary.

DEFENSIVE BACKS

Secondary retooled via portalDB

Co-DC Torrian Gray brings in several transfer additions to pair with returning pieces; the strength of the roster historically under Beamer.

SPECIAL TEAMS

KICKING, PUNTING & RETURN GAME
  • Overall: "Beamerball" special teams have been a program hallmark under Shane Beamer (whose father Frank was known for the same at Virginia Tech) — no specific 2026 storylines flagged yet, but this unit is historically a slight positive for South Carolina relative to peers.
