HEAD COACH

HANDICAPPING PROFILE

HEAD COACH

Kalen DeBoer — 3rd season at Alabama

LIFETIME COACHING RECORD

124–20 (11 seasons as a head coach)

Sioux Falls (NAIA) 67–3, 2005–09 • Fresno State 12–6, 2020–21 • Washington 25–3, 2022–23 • Alabama 20–8, 2024–25. Three NAIA national titles at Sioux Falls; Pac-12 titles and a CFP title-game appearance at Washington.

ALABAMA ATS RECORD

16–12 ATS (2024–25 combined)

2024: 7–6 ATS (9–4 SU, missed CFP) • 2025: 9–6 ATS (11–4 SU, SEC title game, CFP quarterfinal). Also 20–6 vs. AP Top 25 and 30–9 in one-score games across his six combined seasons at Fresno State, Washington and Alabama.

HANDICAPPING NOTES — DeBoer

  • Home vs. road split (2025): Alabama was just 3–2 ATS at home but 6–2 ATS on the road, and 0–2 ATS in true neutral-site games (SEC Championship, CFP). Live trend to track into 2026.
  • Trap-game risk: DeBoer has dropped 4 games to unranked opponents through his first two SEC seasons (including the 2025 opener at Florida State as a top-10 favorite) — a live "look-ahead" and letdown-spot angle.
  • Narrative price: Enters Year 3 under heavy public/media skepticism (Finebaum, Stephen A. Smith) despite an 11-4 season with an SEC title game and CFP berth — the gap between DeBoer's résumé and his outside perception can create mispriced lines in both directions.
  • Year 2/3 pattern: Every prior DeBoer stop (Sioux Falls, Fresno State, Washington) saw a real leap in Year 2; at Alabama that leap showed up in performance (SEC title game, CFP) more than in the pure regular-season win total.

COORDINATORS & SCHEME

OFFENSE / DEFENSE

OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR

Ryan Grubb — 2nd season • Spread / Air Raid

Pass-first system Grubb brought from Washington. Ty Simpson threw for 3,567 yards and 28 TD in 2025, but the run game cratered — 104.1 rush yds/gm, 125th of 136 FBS teams. Alabama fired its OL coach and hired Adrian Klemm (ex-NFL/Oregon) specifically to fix the run block for 2026 — a swing factor for early-season team totals while a nearly all-new line gels.

DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR

Kane Wommack — 3rd season • Base 4-2-5 "Swarm"

Co-DC Maurice Linguist runs the secondary. 2025 unit ranked 13th nationally in total defense (296.8 ypg) and 20th in scoring D (19.2 ppg). Secondary returns almost fully intact; D-line and linebackers were almost entirely rebuilt via the portal for 2026 — early front-seven inexperience is a live unders/pass-funnel angle.

2025 SEASON RECAP

RECORD & VENUE NOTES

2025 RECORD

11–4 (7–1 SEC) — ATS 9–6

SEC Championship: L 7–28 vs. Georgia (neutral). CFP First Round: W 34– 24 at Oklahoma. CFP Quarterfinal: L 3–38 at Indiana.

HOME FIELD

Saban Field at Bryant–Denny Stadium

Natural Bermuda grass (NorthBridge/Latitude 36) with a synthetic-turf sideline apron and SubAir climate-controlled drainage. Capacity 100,077 — averaged the 8th-largest crowd of any football team in the world in 2025. True grass surface all season; no turf-transition spots on the home slate.

PRIMARY SKILL PLAYERS

2026 PROJECTED STARTERS
QB1Keelon RussellSoph
NFL WATCH

Battling senior Austin Mack for the job. Program's highest-rated QB signee in the modern recruiting era; long-term 1st-round buzz if he wins the job and produces.

RB1Daniel HillSoph

Enters fall as the lead back (284 yds, 6 TD on 75 carries in 2025) but faces real pressure from true-freshman Ezavier Crowell (4-star, No. 31 overall in the 2026 class).

WR1Ryan WilliamsJr
NFL WATCH

Former consensus No. 1 WR in the 2024 class and one of the most hyped signees in program history; projected first-round talent if he declares.

WR2Lotzeir BrooksSoph

Breakout true freshman in 2025 (441 yds, 2 TD receiving; 283 KR yards) with clutch playoff moments; rising Day 2/3 name.

OFFENSIVE LINE

2026 PROJECTED — UNIT UNDER FULL REBUILD
Michael CarrollRT/RGSoph
5-STAR

Only returning starter on the entire line (IMG Academy 5-star); 2025 Freshman All-SEC.

Jackson LloydLTRS-Soph

Named starter early in spring with the staff citing no real competition at the position.

Kaden StrayhornC/OGSoph

Michigan transfer (former IMG signee); steps into the presumptive center job.

William SandersOLSoph

Four-star signee (2024, No. 24 IOL nationally); missed spring with injury but DeBoer has kept him in the mix for a starting guard spot in 2026 after 15 knockdown blocks on limited 2025 snaps.

HANDICAPPING NOTE — O-LINE

  • All 5 starters from 2025 are gone (2 to the NFL Draft, 3 to graduation/portal). Alabama hired a new OL coach (Adrian Klemm) specifically to fix a run game that finished 125th of 136 FBS teams a year ago — expect real early-season variance up front, especially on the road against physical fronts.

DEFENSIVE LINE

2026 PROJECTED
London SimmonsDL

Returning depth piece from 2025 front.

Jeremiah BeamanDL

Returning depth piece from 2025 front.

Edric HillDL

Returning depth piece from 2025 front.

Desmond UmeozuluEdge

South Carolina transfer, 6'6"/253; 36 games of high-level experience. 2027 NFL Draft radar.

Devan ThompkinsDT

Transfer, 6'5"/298; multi-position front interior piece.

Terrance GreenDL

Transfer addition to the interior rotation.

LINEBACKERS

2026 PROJECTED
  • Alabama's linebacker room was almost entirely rebuilt for 2026 and is headlined by early-enrolled five-star true freshman Xavier Griffin . This is the thinnest, least-proven unit on the roster and is arguably the Crimson Tide's single biggest defensive question mark — a group worth monitoring closely for run-defense and coverage line moves early in the season.

DEFENSIVE BACKS

2026 PROJECTED — PROGRAM STRENGTH
Zabien BrownCB
NFL WATCH

Top-5 nationally ranked CB in the 2024 class; considered a likely first-round talent for 2027.

Dijon Lee Jr.CB

Returning starter opposite Brown in a secondary ranked among the nation's top 4 entering 2026.

Keon SabbS
NFL WATCH5-STAR

Former five-star DB signee; on the 2027 NFL Draft radar.

Bray HubbardS
NFL WATCH

Former HS quarterback; two-plus seasons starting, reads QBs well. Top-billed 2027 NFL safety prospect.

Red MorganDB/Husky

Likely starter at the hybrid "Husky" role in Wommack's sub-package looks.

SPECIAL TEAMS

KICKING, PUNTING & RETURN GAME
  • Kicker: Conor Talty (16-of-23 FG, 48-of-48 XP in 2025) is in an open camp competition with transfer Lorcan Quinn (21-of-26 FG in limited action elsewhere) — a battle worth tracking for game total/field-goal-range confidence early on.
  • Punter: 2025 unit averaged 42.3 yds/punt with a long of 60; Brooks Doud and Adam Watford in the mix for 2026 duties.
  • Returners: Lotzeir Brooks (KR: 15 att, 18.9 avg, long 25); Dijon Lee Jr. and Ryan Williams both saw punt-return snaps. No special-teams touchdowns either direction in 2025 — a low-variance return game so far, worth revisiting once the new WR/RB pieces (Morgan, Crowell) get involved.

Offensive Line

Full offensive line rebuild

Alabama replaces every full-time starter from the previous front five while integrating a portal tackle on the right side. The line's communicator is a holdover from Washington, which helps, but continuity is low.

Quarterback

Third year in the same passing system

The starting quarterback enters his third year under the same offensive structure. Scheme familiarity often shows up most in protection adjustments and third-down efficiency.

Linebackers

Defensive continuity is the counterweight

The defensive coordinator, front and linebacker communicator all return. That stability is worth weighing against the offensive turnover.
